Type Specimen for Orientation, a typeface designed by Sandrine Nugue in 2018, and obtained from Commercial Type foundry.
Size: 17x23cm.
This specimen is composed of two sections: a technical section, and a practical section. Both parts are wrapped by the same cover, but each part has its own booklet. They are also printed in different paper materials: for the cover I decided to use a Glossy Coated paper 250gr, thicker than the rest in order to ensure the resistance and give a magazine style. Same paper material is used for the practical part, but in this case much thinner, 150gr. On the other hand, the technical part is printed on a So Wool Merinos 120gr uncoated paper. Making reference to the name of the typeface, I played with the orientation of the booklet, so each section will be read from a different position.
The technical part displays all the possible weights of the typeface; and the practical part showcases the visual identity of a music festival called “Vale Indie Festival”, based on this typeface and designed exclusively for this project. This example will demonstrate how its abstract and dynamic forms can be applied to various surfaces, creating a visually engaging and versatile design language.
The name of the festival comes from the Spanish word “vale”, which means “okay.” This word transmits the same good and positive vibe as the typeface, the indie style, and the music festivals. Additionally, the color palette selected for the identity of this festival matches the style, which is composed of three bold and vibrant colors.
